Selected as part of the Moses Znaimer-curated exhibition THE LAST TABOO, which takes place in Toronto from October 31-November 1, 2009, this stylized documentary photographic experiment, titled Women of a Sensual Age, captured the sitting of three women over fifty, to create an oil portrait. The exhibition focus is on breaking down stigmas around aging and celebrating all stages of life.
At first reticent to disrobe, the women in this photographic series were invited to reveal to the painter, and to me, the photographer, only that which reflects how they each perceive their sensual self at this moment of their life.
The resulting images reveal not only the timeless beauty of the subjects as they began to trust and connect with their own bodies and senses, but the inner critic as well, whose voice often surfaces in a woman's subconscious at any age, especially in moments of seeing one's body in direct comparison to another. In this crucial moment lies both the danger of a woman to recoil and hide, or the magical opportunity for her to embrace and revel in her unique beauty that has no equal.
Women of a Sensual Age defies outmolded stigmas about aging. Each image captures one moment in time, redefining societal definitions of sensuality, something all women possess and deserve to embrace and celebrate throughout their lives. |
